Shining Armor sculpture commission by MadPonyScientist Shining Armor sculpture commission by MadPonyScientist
This is a commission for :icontoadma: ...I spent a LOT of time on this one... hope you like it!

He is entirely hand sculpted. No tools other than a toothpick... which made those buttons and tiny crosses a pain in the butt to do, but I just refuse to use tools. I know, I'm crazy....why do you think my username is MADponyscientist!!!!

I think it's great you don't use tools it is hard work, but the result is often smoother and has more charicter. Personaly I use a knife, but I don't use actual clay tools..

What colors did you use on the clay?

You mean paint? The only paint that was used was on his eyes and cutie mark. The rest was colored clay.

He is more than regular ponies because there are so many details to that uniform and his hooves so this one is $80 plus shipping.

Pieces, really! I'm going to try to sculpt a bunch of base ponies, and then sell them as OC's with mane/tail and paint to specifications. I'm really excited about trying it, and I want to try a lot of different poses and expressions. And then I feel like it will be easier for me to do customs - I'm afraid to start because I don't want someone to be unhappy with the results. This way, the majority of the pony will be done and there to see aside from the customization part.

I dunno...am I crazy?

All I know is this, my ponies with poses I choose don't sell as well as my commissions. I think it is because most people either want a regular standing pose or they want to show you exactly how they want it. Some will give you wiggle room once they trust that you will make a nice pony but some want it a certain way and that's it...those people i usually send somewhere else because they are very likely to be disappointed because it is almost impossible to give someone exactly what they want unless they have an exact picture for reference. Some only have an idea and want you to imagine their idea and make it exactly like that...send those people away!! But yeah, for pre-made base ponies, I would stick with the regular standing ponies. For your own projects and commissions do the more cool poses. This suggestion is from many months of trial and error trying to figure out what people will buy. Take my head-spinning Rainbow Dash for example..it actually spins and is a cool and unique pose but I can't give the thing away... but a standing well made Rainbow Dash sells easily. Or a cute pose but premaking cute poses is tricky because you might think it's cute and so may a lot of others but that DOES NOT mean people will buy it (or at least not for much). I have learned that lesson time and time again.
Last thing...do you have a price in mind?

I was thinking $50 flat per pony, plus actual shipping cost.

Okay, if you want to do that you might want to wait a bit and build up a bit of a reputation because that is what most of us, including me charge for commissions for a basic pony and people don't know you that well yet (as a pony sculptor) so they might not commission you for them much until they do.

It's better than undercutting all the established pony sculptors, right? As far as reputation goes, that's where I like the idea of selling a base pony with customization to order. Most of the figure would be completed up front, and a potential buyer would know exactly what they were getting.
If they don't sell, I can always make them into background ponies for myself, or work them into a bigger project.

I did a 15-minute pony! Or part of one...I couldn't even manage to get two out of the four legs done! And it kind of looks more like a cat than a pony. D=

I wouldn't worry about undercutting anyone. I know of several people that sell theirs for $30 or less while they are building their skills and reputation. I just don't want you to get discouraged.

I saw that and she looks pretty good actually! I am pretty fast it seems compared to most but I sculpt for hours every day so it is almost second nature. The funny thing is that I can make one look like that in 15 minutes but if I was going to sell it, I would have spent another 5 to 8 hours on it to fine tune it!!

How much did this cost? Your work is simply beautiful. I have a series of questions I'll ask here, but feel free to note me the replies if you'd see fit. How long does it usually take to sculpt these ponies, do you do oc ponies as long as a ref or detailed description is provided. You use paypal? Is there a limit to how many a person may request/order? Should the price be in my range I may end up requesting a bunch of ponies. I'd assume they'd make wonderful gifts and great collection pieces.

Glad you like him, but if you really want to see a sculpting goddess you need to check out :iconwood-splitter-lee: and make sure you look at her sculpture folder (her other art, like her posable creatures are just as amazing) because she made most of her sculptures when she was 13 and 14 years old and only uses a butter knife and a needle and her sculptures are 10 times better than mine. She is a true sculpting and paining prodigy!!!!!

AMG I...you are so right! The pose-able caribou(I think) I just found that yesterday and I couldn't believe that it was a sculpture. She is amazing!

Yeah, she is mostly doing those pose-able creatures these days. She started with the regular sculptures in her sculptures folder and they are just as incredible. The crazy thing is that she paints pictures as well as these sculptures she makes!!!! Any time someone tells me how good I am I immediately point them in her direction.
